ECOSYSTEMS > INLAND OREGON > LAKES AND PONDS
People may drain some naturally-occurring lakes just to create artificial ones in other, more advantageous locations. Often these lakes are designed to assist with agriculture, to provide recreational opportunities such as fishing and boating, or for household uses. Some are the result of other large-scale construction projects. For example, Lake Celilo was “created” after the construction of The Dalles Dam on the Columbia River when obstructed water flooded a nearby lowland originally occupied by a Native American fishing village. |
