Angiosperm

Eriophullum lanatum

This herbaceous plant is common in the more arid and rocky regions of the American West. The plant grows in multiple branches up to 2 feet (60 cm) in height. The stems and leaves are covered in soft white hairs and during the spring and summer, it produces bright yellow flowers. Because it is a prolific seed producer and establishes itself quickly in a variety of soils, the woolly sunflower will often blanket a large area. The plant can produce an impressive display of color with flowers as large as 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) across. The seeds are narrow and topped with a crown of short scales.

The sunflower is highly resistant to both drought and colder temperatures and will adapt easily to changing soil conditions.

The plant is commonly known as Oregon sunshine.

Distribution

It is native to the western half of North American and commonly found at elevations below 10,000 feet. Although often used as an ornamental plant, it is found naturally growing in areas with dry, rocky or sandy soil. It is particularly common in deserts, grasslands and along the roadside. In the Pacific Northwest, it can be found on both sides of the Cascade Mountains from southern British Columbia to southern Oregon.

Conservation Status

Common.
