ECOSYSTEMS > INLAND OREGON > LAKES AND PONDS
Sometimes called intermittent or seasonal lakes, these bodies of water appear only during the rainy season. Sometimes they are otherwise dry lake beds that fill periodically due to rainfall, snow or flooding. In many cases, ephemeral lakes do not have surface outlets (such as streams or rivers) into which they feed. As a result, they slowly disappear due to evaporation or seepage into the ground. Most of Oregon's ephemeral lakes can be found in the southeastern part of the state where high temperatures and arid conditions create rapid evaporation. Ephemeral lakes may also appear in unexpected places in urban areas — such as a parking lot which fills with water during heavy rainfall. Because they are not permanent features, most ephemeral lakes are not named. If the lake disappears for good, it is called a missing lake. |
