REGIONS > WESTERN OREGON > WILLAMETTE VALLEY > SALEM AND VICINITY
Historically, it's been known as Hayden Island. Officially, it's known as the Gail Achterman Wildlife Area. But to Ann Kreager, it's simply "my island." Ann's affection for this small dot of land located to the southwest of Salem has come from her years of acting as its steward. As a field biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, it is Ann's job to survey, assess, and improve the island's riparian forest, wetlands, and aquatic habitats. Many of these ecosystems were deeply impacted by a gravel quarry which existed there from the 1960s to the 1980s, and by the proliferation of invasive plants which have forced out native species. The island is accessible to the public but only from the Willamette River by boat or kayak. In this four part video series, Ann introduces us to the island, its challenges with invasive plants, and how ODFW is actively working to restore the habitat to its natural state. This feature was made possible by conservation and recreation funding from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. |
