Boletus Edulis

This mushroom can be found throughout the Pacific Northwest and in locations all around the world. It can grow to very large proportions, with the cap measuring over 10 inches in diameter with a thick, club-shaped stem. The cap is ordinarily convex in shape but will flatten with age. A reticulated pattern covers the top of the cap. This fungus can come in a variety of colors from pale brown to deep red.

The king bolete mushroom is a popular food due to its large size, meaty texture and a nutty flavor. An amber colored dye can also be extracted from this plant which can be used on clothing and other textiles. It is one of the most sought-after mushrooms in the world.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Most forms of mushroom are poisonous! No mushroom should be eaten unless you know exactly what you are doing or have an experienced, knowledgable person to guide you.

Distribution

The king bolete can be found after rain showers during the spring and summer. It seems to favor conifer forests where Douglas-fir, pine and Sitka spruce trees are in close proximity. They can be found in oak woodlands. They can grow singly or in clusters.

This mushroom can be found in the temperate and sub-tropical regions North America, Europe and Asia.
