Sub-Alpine Meadows
Meadows
ECOSYSTEMS > INLAND OREGON  > MEADOWS

These meadows can only be found at higher elevations where colder temperatures, high winds and limited ground water will restrict tree growth. As a result, sub-alpine meadows are dominated by grasses and short shrubs. Lichens may also be plentiful, clinging to the underside of rocks where they are better protected from the elements.

Like coastal meadows, these are considered “perpetual meadows” because they have environmental conditions which will always prevent the growth of woody plants like trees.
