REGIONS > WESTERN OREGON > WILLAMETTE VALLEY
The Willamette is a major river located in northwestern Oregon. It runs south to north for a total length of 187 miles (301 km). It runs along the western edge of the Willamette Valley and is bordered by two large mountain ranges: the Coast Range Mountains and the Cascades. Along the way, it is fed by numerous tributary streams and rivers, including the Santiam, McKenzie, Calapooia and Clackamas. The Willamette River intersects with the Columbia River near Portland. As the major water source in the Willamette Valley, the river has always played a key role in the settlement of the area, first by the Native Americans and later by Euro-Americans immigrating from the eastern part of the United States. The abundance of water and fertile soils made the river and surrounding valley an attractive place to homestead and were key factors in the development of the Oregon Trail. Today, the river is still a vital component to Oregon's economy, agricultural industry, environmental health and recreational activities. All of the major cities in western Oregon, including Portland, Salem, Eugene and Corvallis, are located on or near the river. |
