Jacques Cousteau became a worldwide celebrity for being one of the first people to use SCUBA gear to explore sunken ships and aircraft. Today, “wreck diving” is a unique (but often risky) recreational activity. Some countries have created an entire tourism industry around wreck diving, offering visitors the chance to explore both military and commercial vessels up close. Part of the allure of wreck diving is glimpsing a relic from the past. Part is experiencing how marine life has reclaimed these human artifacts, turning them into artificial reefs.
