REGIONS > OREGON CENTRAL COAST
Although a small coastal town of approximately Newport is considered one of the most important hubs of marine exploration on the west coast of the United States. Built between the Pacific Ocean and the wide Yaquina Bay, this small coastal town is home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium (which brought you the Oceanscape Network), the Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Fleet headquarters, the U.S. Coast Guard and many more. Many of these organizations are clustered around the edge of the Yaquina Bay. Connected to the Willamette Valley by Highway US Route 20, Newport is often the first stop for people visiting the Central Coast. Recreational opportunities abound here, and include a variety of state parks, federal lands, historic sites, shopping, restaurants and hotels. |
A Hub of Sustainability:Like many of Oregon's coastal towns, Newport's economy relies heavily on harvesting the bounty of the sea. The town boasts the largest fishing fleet and working bay front in the state, providing visitors with the chance to fish offshore or buy fresh catch directly from the boats in the bay.
All of Newport's fisheries are certified as sustainable, which means precautions are followed to prevent the over-harvesting of animals so they can naturally reproduce and maintain their populations while protecting their habitats and ensuring people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods. Newport fisheries include Oregon pink shrimp, dungeness crab, albacore tuna and lingcod. |
