REGIONS > WESTERN OREGON > UMPQUA RIVER VALLEY
Originally known as Deer Creek, this small city in the central Umpqua River Valley was later named for an early pioneer. Roseburg is bisected from east to west by the South Umpqua River (pictured above) and from north to south by Interstate 5. The river plays a large role in the community's history, including fur trapping in the nineteenth century, fishing, agriculture, and a variety of recreational activities. Beginning in the late 1930s, Roseburg was a boom town for the lumber industry and was known as the "Lumber Capital of the World." Enjoying a mild Mediterranean climate, Roseburg rarely suffers extreme weather with mild winters and low humidity summers. These conditions are ideal for growing wine grapes and vineyards are common in the area. The weather and proximity to many outdoor attractions also make Roseburg a great hub from which to explore western Oregon. Aside from the Umpqua River, Crater Lake is two hours by car to the east and the Oregon Coast about the same travel time to the west. The Klamath Mountains, along with the larger communities of Grants Pass and Medford are south of the city. |
