The Siskiyou Mountains are a subrange of the Klamath mountain range which is located in southwestern Oregon. Mount Ashland is the subrange's highest peak at 7,533 feet (2,296 m). The peak is located due south of the town of Ashland and is a popular winter recreation area best known for its excellent skiing. The Interstate 5 highway passes directly through these mountains, reaching an elevation of 4,310 feet (1,310 m) at the Siskiyou Summit. Drainage from these mountains feeds into both the Rogue River and Klamath Rivers and is an important water source for wildlife and local agriculture. The mountain range vary greatly in elevation, precipitation and temperature. As such, the Siskiyous have a tremendous amount of biodiversity with ecosystems ranging from woodlands to subalpine meadows. |
